Kratom in the news

Kratom in the news

Kratom has been getting a lot of attention in the media lately and although bad press is still better than no press, I think the kratom community would rather not have to deal with this kind of negative publicity.   So, why is kratom suddenly in the news everywhere?   It's a plant that has been around for thousands of years so why now does it appear seemingly out of nowhere...   the answer lies in the United States FDA program.   That's right.   The Food and Drug Administration is trying its hardest to shut down any kratom advocates with the "it's bad for your health" approach.  And they do appear to have all the proof they need to attack this nasty little plant:   15 deaths have been reported in the last 2 years!   It's time to roll up their sleeves and make America great again by outlawing another plant....!    Because haven't we learned anything with making marijuana illegal for the past 50 years?

I get it.   The FDA is acting on orders from the pharmaceutical companies who have a lot of money to lose if this one little plant can help do the same exact things as their own expensive name brands.   If people who are in pain are now taking an all natural plant instead of paying $100 for one pill from the big companies, these same companies have a lot to lose.   So, they throw money at the FDA to get this plant outlawed "for the sake of human health" because I'm sure our health is the government's #1 concern!   15 people dead in 2 years? What these news reports fail to mention was that in all of these cases, they had other prescription drugs in their systems that may have been the reason they died.  In fact, according to a 2016 review, "Although death has been attributed to kratom use, there is no solid evidence that kratom was the sole contributor to an individual’s death."

So, let's talk numbers - kratom was present in the deaths of 15 people in the past 2 years.   Well, according to the CDC, every day, over 1,000 people are treated in emergency departments for misusing prescription drugs and in 2014 alone, there were close to 19,000 deaths contributed to these same drugs.   By the way, marijuana is still at 0 deaths.

”If people let the government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls who live under tyranny.”- Thomas Jefferson
